His Excellency Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations
Subject: Outlines of the main priorities of Algeria in the Security Council 2024-2025
Mr. Secretary-General,
Algeria was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2024-2025. This election to the principal organ of the United Nations places upon our country a special responsibility of participating in the international decision-making process aimed at strengthening international peace and security. Thus, Algeria will have a renewed opportunity, after successfully assuming the presidency of the League of Arab States, to reaffirm the founding principles and ideals of its foreign policy and share its vision on issues on the international agenda of the Security Council, drawing on its heavy historical legacy.
Respect for the principles and ideals of the United Nations Charter occupies a prominent place in the doctrine of Algerian foreign policy.
Algeria, on the basis of its principles rooted in its history and derived from its glorious revolution, will not hesitate to contribute dynamically and in agreement with all Member States to the promotion and consecration of the sacred principles and values of the Charter of the United Nations and the embodiment of the noble goals for which this Organization was born.
Algeria has always formulated its commitment to the values of multilateral action and placed respect for the rules and principles of the United Nations Charter and international law at the heart of its vision, foremost of which is the right of peoples to self-determination. Likewise, Algeria has always worked to enhance cooperation and friendship between countries at the regional, continental and international levels, as well as to promote the principle of peaceful settlement of disputes.
This enabled it to contribute to international efforts aimed at resolving many regional and international crises, through peaceful dialogue and mediation, such as the mediation that led to the signing of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali, emanating from the Algiers Agreement, which still heads the Follow-up and Implementation Committee.
With regard to the outline of its main priorities in the Security Council, Algeria, which aims to contribute to the work of the Council, is determined to focus its efforts on strengthening international peace and security, promoting renewed multilateral action and strengthening key partnerships as well as promoting the principles and values of non-alignment, and continuing to combat terrorism as well About the participation of women and youth in all these international efforts.
Algeria will be keen to carry the voice of Arab and African countries and ensure the defense of common strategic interests in the various issues that fall under the jurisdiction of the Security Council, especially the Palestinian issue. Algeria is fully committed to the African approach to making Africa a peaceful continent, steadily and resolutely moving towards its development and integration goals, strong in its values and a key player in the developments that shape the future of humanity.
On this basis, the principle of "African solutions to African problems" was adopted with the continent's clearly stated will to silence the guns, and for the settlement of many crises and conflicts in Africa.
Aware of the dialectical relationship between peace and development, Algeria, through its Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development, has launched development projects in some African countries focusing mainly on health, education and water, with a financial envelope of one billion dollars.
Strengthening strategic partnerships between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations, in accordance with Chapter VIII of the United Nations Charter, is one of the main objectives of Algeria in the United Nations system. In addition to conflict prevention and peacekeeping, these partnerships are essential to achieving sustainable development. Algeria also calls for strengthening the partnership between the African Union and the United Nations for a better future for Africa and humanity. In this way, and as part of promoting greater and better cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union, Algeria has started, since 2013, in Oran, to host high-level sessions of the Peace and Security Symposium (Oran Process).
Algeria remains firmly committed to the principle of non-alignment and respect for its independence and sovereign decisions. The relevance and validity of this principled position has been proven by the current developments taking place in the international arena characterized by the redrawing of international relations. Therefore, all member states are required to renew their commitment to the movement and redouble their efforts in order to revitalize its role in restoring balances to international relations.
On the other hand, and as coordinator of the African Union on combating terrorism and violent extremism, Algeria will continue to exchange its long recognized and recognized experience in combating terrorism and extremism. Violent violence, which will be an integral part of its work within the Security Council, in order to contribute to the efforts made in this field and to enhance cooperation and coordination in this framework.
Those are the outlines of its main priorities in the Security Council, which are based on the principles and values that are supreme in Algeria's foreign policy doctrine, rooted in its struggle history and glorious liberation revolution. Without a doubt, my country will be able, thanks to its vision and basic principles, to contribute effectively and actively, in agreement with all member states of the UN Security Council, to the promotion and promotion of international peace and security.
Please accept, Mr. Secretary-General, the assurances of my highest consideration and respect
