In  recognition of its pivotal role in its region, Algeria was elected today, in the first round and by an overwhelming majority, by the United Nations General Assembly, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, for a two-year term starting from January 1, 2024, following the vote of 193 member states of the United nations.

This election, which represents a valuable gain added to the balance of our country's foreign policy, reflects the appreciation and respect enjoyed by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, by the international community, and his gratitude for his contribution to the establishment of international peace and security. This diplomatic success clearly confirms the return of the new Algeria to the international arena and supports the vision and approach of the President of the Republic to maintain peace and security in the world on the basis of peaceful coexistence, peaceful settlement of disputes and non-interference in the internal affairs of states within the framework of our country's foreign policy whose principles, values ​​and ideals derive from our glorious liberation revolution. .

After Algeria assumed the presidency of the League of Arab States summit with great success, this election in the main body of the United Nations charged with maintaining international peace and security gives our country a special responsibility represented in contributing to the path of international decision-making, and it is a renewed opportunity for our country to reaffirm its principles and values ​​and exchange its vision. on issues on the agenda of the Security Council in the field of international peace and security.

Algeria, which aspires to contribute to the work of the Security Council, under the wise leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is determined to focus its efforts on strengthening international peace and security, revitalizing renewed multilateral action while strengthening key partnerships as well as promoting the principles and values ​​of non-alignment and continuing efforts to combat terrorism. and enhancing the participation of women and youth in these international efforts. 

Algeria will also be keen to make the voice of Arab and African countries heard and to defend common strategic interests in various issues that fall within the competence of the Security Council.

Algeria seizes this happy occasion to express its sincere thanks and deep gratitude to the African Union, the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation for their precious adoption and generous sponsorship of her candidacy. It also reaffirms its firm and purposeful determination to defend the just causes of these spaces of its belonging and to promote all its aspirations and hopes within the Security Council.

Algeria also extends the same verses of thanks and gratitude to all the Member States of the United Nations that have distinguished it by placing their confidence in it and surrounded it with support and backing to enable it to join this central body that has been entrusted with the heavy and noble task of maintaining international peace and security
